Oil on composition board, 39.5 x 49.5cm (image), 53 x 64cm (frame). Signed lower left ‘T. BADDILEY’. An elegant still life of a vase of white roses, with silk drapery to the left, in a darkened room. Some areas of craquelure to middle and lower left, minor paint loss, the frame with damage. Available for local pickup, otherwise courier to be arranged and paid for by bidder.
Tom Baddiley was born in 1921 at Toowong, Queensland. He enlisted in the Australian Army during World War II, later becoming a teacher at Brighton Grammar School, Melbourne, where he was head of the junior school from 1970-87. Baddiley is highly regarded as a floral, still life and landscape painter, and remembered also as a generous philanthropist. He died in 2017 in Brisbane.
