Currency Note – G. Stokell, One Shilling, 1825, VG

Dated April 16 1825 (1825 printed), No.493, GEORGE STOKELL, TIMBER MERCHANT AND GENERAL DEALER, MACQUARIE STREET, vertically left with ornamentation under, delicate and almost complete with raggedy margins, centre holes and folded edges, evenly toned with faded but legible details, scarce.
Side note: George Stokell and his wife arrived in Van Diemen’s Land on the ‘Venerable’ in 1822. With his capital he became a merchant and land owner. He prospered until his store manager Parrot, embezzled large sums of money. Stokell, although facing bankruptcy, soldiered on and over time restored his financial and social status, dying a wealthy man in 1874.
